Tactile Art Club - Valentine's Day Pop Out Cards

“El Dia Del Amor y la Amistad” Valentine's Day is called “The Day of Love and Friendship” in Latin America, and I find it beautiful how the name encapsulates multiple forms of love, without confining the holiday strictly to romance. In our Tactile Art Club meeting, we celebrated Valentine's Day by honoring the people and things we love in life. The meeting was a great time to share the joy with loved ones and celebrate together as a community. During the club, we learned to make origami hearts.

My favorite part of this project was how versatile it was, and I was amazed at how people took a simple idea and made it their own. It was also very fulfilling to make gifts for friends and family using tactile artwork. I also enjoyed having people share techniques and ideas from our past Valentine’s Day celebration, where we made pop-out cards. Many people ended up making a hybrid of an origami heart and a card, which was so creative and beautiful. Reflecting on past Tactile Art Club projects made me so grateful that the club has thrived for over a year, even though a global pandemic. It has been such a pleasure for me to witness our community form, and I can’t wait for what’s to come.

For those interested in creating 3d hearts themselves, here is a transcript of instructions:

  1. Start with a square sheet of paper. To turn your paper into a square, fold the bottom right corner to the top left part of the page. Then, cut off the excess edge

  2. Fold the paper in half by folding the top corner to the bottom corner, then unfold.

  3. Fold the left corner to the right corner, then unfold.

  4. Fold the top corner to the center

  5. Fold the bottom corner to the top edge.

  6. Fold the bottom left and right edges to the center crease.

  7. Fold the top and side corners back.
